RTS International has won a contract with new joint venture company MHI Vestas Offshore Wind (MVOW)™ to deploy IRATA Level 3 and Composite Engineers to assist in inspection and minor repair of blades using the Limpet® M5 Multi-Functional Height Safety System. The use of this system is a world first for the offshore wind industry.
Specialising in fall protection, climb assist and personnel hoists, Edinburgh based Limpet Technology have specifically developed the Limpet® M5 to meet the demanding operations and maintenance requirements of the latest generation of offshore turbines. Certified for offshore use by Germanischer Lloyd, the Limpet® M5 incorporates remote controlled personnel hoisting that will allow RTS’ engineers to precisely position themselves on the 45 metre long blades of the Vestas V90-3.0 MW turbines, with significantly less time and physical effort than using traditional rope access methods. The Limpet® M5 additionally offers enhanced safety features that will allow RTS workers to be rapidly rescued by colleagues in the event of an emergency.
Following an exclusive 2-year agreement signed with Limpet Technology in October last year, RTS International is the only renewable technical services provider in the UK with Limpet System accredited engineers. After several successful inspection and repair projects onshore, in which the Limpet® proved its credentials, the contract with MHI Vestas will see the Limpet® M5 used commercially offshore for the first time.
